Post- Medieval country house.

Houses some of the relics from the Royal House of Scotland.

 

1679                   A Caroline House.

17th C                 Built by the Streatfield family.

18th C                 Altered and extended.

c.1805                The family seat of Squire Henry Streatfield who turned it into a Gothic looking castle under the architect William Atkinson.

1829                   Alterations.

19th C                  Altered to look like a castle and converted into a country house.

1938                    Sold to Lady Astor.

1939-1945          Between: Military base.

1945                    Used as Long Dere School.

1955                    In a semi-derelict state.

1955-1977          Owned by Denis Bower.

1956                     Opened to the public.

1977                     Castle left to the Nation in a will.

1986                      Used in the movie A Room With A View
