Wymondley Castle

Rectangular Romano-British earthwork. Medieval motte and bailey castle defended by a rampart and ditch. The ditch was once wet and the motte measuring 28 m diameter and 2.5 m high

Had two periods of construction.

Possibly an Anarchy castle built by John de Argentin.

 

12th C                          Built.

1822                            Excavated. Finds included Roman and Medieval pottery.
