Mortimer’s Castle

  • Much Marcle, Herefordshire.

  • Scheduled Monument.

 

Medieval motte and bailey castle defended by a rampart and ditch with a possible scarp. The motte measuring 52 m in diameter and standing 6.5 m high and the inner bailey was situated to the east of the motte. Had a shell keep.

 

*                                  Believed that the church tower was built from the remains of the castle.

1272-1304                   Between: Edward I granted Much Marcle to Edmund Mortimer, 1st Earl of Wigmore.

17 C                            Could still be clearly traced.
